South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is a popular diet developed by Dr Arthur Agatston, an American cardiologist, and promoted in a best-selling book that he first published in 2003.

The South Beach Diet emphasizes eating high-fiber, low glycemic-index carbohydrates, unsaturated fats, and lean protein. The diet classifies carbohydrates and fats as "good"or "bad".

The South Beach Diet has three stages. At the start, the amount of carbohydrate consumed is relatively small, but as you progress through the stages, the proportion of carbohydrate consumed gradually increases, and the proportion of fat and protein gradually increases. There are no calorie restrictions in the South Beach diet, and the diet also includes as exercise program.

The first stage of the diet aims for rapid weight loss (13 pounds in just 2 weeks), but is unclear how many people achieve this. Some authorities (for example the UK's National Health Service) also describe possible side-effects with the diet, principally during stage one - side effects may include bad breath, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, nausea, and tiredness.
